One of the best things to do in Wiesbaden is to enjoy wine. Wiesbaden is located right at the fringe of the historic Rheingau wine region and with that wine (and not beer) rules. Below find a list of locals’ most favourite wine tasting …uh.. drinking spots.
Chateau Nero – ‘winegarden’ with a view
Taste wines on Wiesbaden city’s very own mountain, the Neroberg, which also lends its name to the vineyard that sits on the slopes. Chateau Nero is a no-frills alfresco wine bar located on top, sporting unrivalled views. Grab a glass of the Neroberg Riesling, vinified from the grapes growing in front of you, and enjoy the laid back vibes of this scenic spot.
Open in summer, Tuesday to Sunday, 15.00-22.00 hrs. Insiders take the funicular from the city center to the top of Neroberg (check out Nerobergbahn).
Balthasar Ress Weinbar & Vinothek
Have a taste of Rheingau winemaker Balthasar Ress’ collection in their modern wine bar in the pedestrian area of Wiesbaden city center. Get some of their cheese or meat nibbles and tickle the staff for their excellent knowledge of the Ress wines and vineyards. Or ask for their tasting flights.
Open every day from 4-10pm, except Sunday.
The World’s Longest Winebar: Rheingauer Weinwoche
This one needs a bit of scheduling: The Rheingauer Weinwoche is a wine festival in the city center of Wiesbaden, annually taking place in the third week of August (this year from August 12-22) – with hundreds of participating wineries pouring their wines. It is estimated that 300.000 bottles of wines are emptied by the time the event closes.
Wine in a Living Room: Der Weinländer
The winebar and restaurant Der Weinländer is one of the locals’ favourite watering hole – so popular they can even do without a proper website. Enjoy wines as if you were in a living room – but with freshly prepared food and over 20 wines by the glass. There can be impromptu life music as well.
Weinod – Wine & Culture
‘Open when the wineries aren’t’ – That’s the claim of this hip and relaxed wine-gem in the city center of Wiesbaden. Weinod is offering one of the widest spread of Rheingau wines in town. But also other German wine regions are represented, as well as wines from Southern Europe. And then there is simple but very tasty food too, a winter raclette giving a nod to our friends from Switzerland.
