Exploring Mainz Beyond Wine: Two Must-Visit Craft Breweries

I get it… not everyone is a wine lover…

As a wine tour organizer in Mainz, I spend my days introducing visitors to the incredible wines of Germany. But not everyone who joins one of our wine tours or wine tastings is a glowing wine enthousiast. Every now and then a partner or friend admits to preferring a good craft beer over a glass of Riesling. Fortunately, Mainz has something for everyone — including fantastic craft breweries that offer tasty locally brewed beer. So, these are two excellent spots that we recommend for beer lovers to savour a glass of beer while exploring Mainz.

KUEHN KUNZ ROSEN: Bold Flavors and Creative Brewing

Located in historic industrial site of Mainz, still close to the city center, KUEHN KUNZ ROSEN (abbreviated by its fans to KKR) is a must-visit for those who appreciate craft beer with character. Known for their experimental and flavor-packed brews, KKR combines traditional brewing techniques with innovative ideas to create something truly special. They change their beer menu every 6 weeks, but you can always expect a mix of classic styles and adventurous new releases.

A few standout options include:

  • Mainzer Pils – A crisp and refreshing take on the classic German Pilsner.
  • Mystique – A hop-forward IPA bursting with citrus and pine aromas.
  • Meenzer Gutsje – One of the frequent seasonal beers, this one being a refreshing ‘Festbier’, just brewed for the carnival season

KKR’s brewery and taproom offer a cozy yet industrial-chic setting, perfect for an evening of beer tasting – make sure you also take a peek into their brewing facilities. Their beer garden is open May to September. If you’re a fan of bold, creative flavors, this is the spot to check out.

11 Beers are served on the tap. Also there is a small selection of warm and cold snacks. The tap room is open Wednesday to Friday from 17.00 hrs, Saturday from 12.00 hrs.

Eulchen: Traditional Meets Modern in a Castle Courtyard

For a brewery with a storybook setting, Eulchen is the place to be. Situated in the mannor-like buildings on top of the Kupferbergterrasse overlooking Mainz, Eulchen embraces both tradition and modern craft brewing. Their beers are brewed using only high-quality ingredients, with a focus on clean, balanced flavors.

Some favorites include:

  • Eulchen Pils – A smooth, well-balanced Pilsner with a crisp finish.
  • Helles – A light, golden lager that’s easy to drink and refreshing.
  • Eulchen Pale Ale – A fruity english style IPA.

With its relaxed atmosphere and scenic location, Eulchen is an excellent spot to enjoy a beer while taking in the charm of Mainz. There are 5 beers on the tap. A big draw is their stealing-the-show sourdough pizzas, freshly baked on spot!

Eulchen’s tap room is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 16.30 hrs.

Something for Everyone in Mainz

Whether you’re on one of BottleStops wine tours or just exploring Mainz on your own, we have options that cater to both wine and beer lovers. KühnKunzRosen and Eulchen showcase the best of Mainz’s craft beer scene, making them perfect stops for anyone looking to enjoy a local brew.

PS: it’s whether it’s with a glas of Riesling or with a glass of craft beer, we say ‘Prost‘ all the same.
